For the Wontons:

  • 1/2 pound ground pork (or shrimp, chicken, or a combination)
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon grated ginger
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 green onions, finely chopped
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Wonton wrappers (you can find these in the refrigerated section of most grocery stores)

For the Soup:

  • 6 cups chicken or vegetable broth
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon grated ginger
  • 2 green onions, sliced
  • 2 cups chopped bok choy or spinach
  • Optional: cooked noodles (such as egg noodles or rice noodles)

1. Prepare the Wonton Filling:

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the ground pork (or other protein), soy sauce, sesame oil, grated ginger, minced garlic, chopped green onions, egg, and black pepper. Mix until well combined.

2. Assemble the Wontons:

  1. Lay out a wonton wrapper on a clean surface.
  2. Place about a teaspoon of the filling mixture in the center of the wrapper.
  3. Wet the edges of the wrapper with water using your fingertip.
  4. Fold the wrapper diagonally to form a triangle, pressing the edges to seal tightly.
  5. Bring the two corners of the triangle together and press to seal, forming a small “boat” shape. Repeat with the remaining filling and wrappers.

3. Cook the Wontons:

  1. Bring a pot of water to a boil.
  2. Carefully drop the wontons into the boiling water, making sure they don’t stick together.
  3. Cook for about 5 minutes, or until the wontons float to the surface and are cooked through. Remove them with a slotted spoon and set aside.

4. Prepare the Soup:

  1. In a separate pot, bring the chicken or vegetable broth to a simmer.
  2. Add the minced garlic, grated ginger, and sliced green onions to the broth. Let simmer for a few minutes to infuse the flavors.
  3. Add the chopped bok choy or spinach to the broth and cook until wilted, about 2-3 minutes.
  4. If using, add the cooked noodles to the broth and heat through.

5. Serve:

  1. Ladle the hot soup into bowls.
  2. Add the cooked wontons to the soup.
  3. Garnish with additional sliced green onions, if desired.
  4. Serve hot and enjoy!

Feel free to adjust the seasonings and ingredients according to your taste preferences. Enjoy your homemade wonton soup!
